Mustangs earn a split to begin New Year
On Saturday, January 5th the Mustangs hit the ice with a new outlook on the remainder of the season. With their new found confidence they were able to split with Pictou County earning a win for the first time Since November 4th in PEI.
The weekend started with a huge effort on Saturday night which saw the Mustangs receive their first win in over 2 months. The boys battled hard for 60 minutes with the largest pay off of the year; some much needed confidence. The game started off with a huge goal, I’ll be it accidental, from Mustangs assistant captain Zach Miller on a dump in on net from center ice. This sparked the boys as they continued on to the second period with a 1-0 lead. This excitement carried on to the 3rd period when the Mustangs took to the ice with a 3-1 lead after goals by MacKenzie Woodman and Alex Rawding. The third period saw an aggressive team back on the ice to finish the game with 2 more goals coming from Alex Nauss and Joel Cleveland for a final score of 5-2.
On Sunday the Mustangs took back to the ice with a similar effort. However, some undisciplined and offensive zone penalties saw the mustangs playing short-handed for much of the game. With the influx of penalties the team found it hard to get rolling on the same path as Saturday night and half way through the third an exhausted team found them down 3-0. The Mustangs did respond with a powerplay goal of their own with 2:46 left in the game but were not able to get any closer, losing 3-1.
With Cory Peterson on the road with his Jr. A club, Cole Skinner played both games stopping 28 shots Saturday and 21 shots on Sunday.
The Mustangs will travel to Bedford this coming weekend for the East Coast Ice Jam Tournament.
