A Split in the County

On Saturday night the Mustangs traveled to Pictou County for a pair of games in hopes of breaking their current losing streak. As the Mustangs found themselves shorthanded on Saturday night it became very obvious that they would need to wear down the Pictou defence. The first period saw the Mustangs finish with a 2 goal deficit. After the intermission it almost seemed as if the Mustangs were a completely different team. They dominated down low, pressuring the Pictou team in order to end the second period 3-2 on goals by Riley Donaldson (2), and Ty Duffus. The Mustangs continued their hard working efforts through the 3rd period as Donaldson completed the hat trick to take a 4-2 lead. Both teams exchanged goals later in the third to end with a final score of 5-3 for the Mustangs finally ending their losing streak. Cory Peterson got the win between the pipes stopping 39 shots.

Sunday morning was a different story. The 5 on 5 hockey was back and forth and both teams were very evenly matched. The problem arose as the Mustangs were caught flat footed on a number of occasions on special teams. Not only were the Mustangs ineffective on the power play but they also gave up 2 short-handed goals. This resulted in the Mustangs going down 5-0 with 13 minutes remaining in the game. After a time out and a goalie change the Mustangs seemed to have their game back as Keegan Cooke potted a power play goal to get back in the game. Everything seemed to be going well for the Mustangs until a questionable Checking from Behind call was made which resulted in the Mustangs, Riley Donaldson being ejected from the game. The mustangs never rebounded after the call and the game ended with a 5-1 loss. Cory Peterson took the loss for the Mustangs stopping 18 shots, while Cole Skinner stopped all 10 shots he faced in relief.
