Stangs Split Home and Home with Dartmouth

Mustangs win 7-6 in OT Sunday despite trailing by 2 late in game.

The South Shore Canadian Tire Mustangs split a home and home series this weekend with the Dartmouth Taylor Flooring Midgets.

Saturday night the Mustangs travelled to the Sportsplex and started fast out of the gate putting pressure on the Ice Dawgs.  Despite outshooting their hosts 13-9 the Mustangs found themselves down 2-0 after the first on oppurtunistic goals by Mackenzie Young and Nathan Sheppard.

Early in the second a bad bounce off a Mustang defencemans skate on a centering attempt put the mustangs down 3-0, 47 seconds into the 2nd.  Goal was credited to Cole Murphy. 

Avery Clarke would get the Mustangs on the board with a powerplay marker with 5 minutes remaining in the 2nd but that was as close as the Mustangs would get as the Dawgs Cole Murphy added his 2nd of the game with 2 seconds remaining in the third to make the final 4-1.

Jack Flinn picked up the win in goal stopping 24 of 25 (.960%) shots while Cole Skinner took the loss stopping 24 of 28 (.857%) shots for the Mustangs.

Sunday the Mustangs came back to the rink focused on being the more aggressive team and they were rewarded.  Despite outshooting their opponents 30-17 it took a gutsy come from behind 7-6 overtime win.

Morgan Messenger led the Mustangs with a goal and 4 assists.  Avery Clarke scored the game tying goal on the powerplay with 4:17 remaining and the game winning goal on the powerplay with 3:37 remaining in overtime.  Clarke also added 2 assists.

Also scoring for the Mustangs was Stone Harnish, Alex Mann (+1 assist), Jamie McIntyre, and Brandon Challoner.

Brennan Bailey added 3 assists with a solid weekend on the blueline.

Dartmouths first line was all over the score sheet with Nathan Sheppard picking up 2G 1A, Cole Murphy 1G 2A, Matthew Graham 1G 3A.  Also scoring was Anthony Cardinal and Alex Webster.

Cole Skinner got the win in goal making 11 saves on 17 shots (.647%) while Brandon Dorrington took the loss stopping 23 of 30 shots (.767%)


The Mustangs are back in action at home on Saturday October 15th when they host the Cape Breton Tradesmen.  Game time is 8pm.
