CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI, August 23, 2011 – Sixteen year old Ryan Graves was a first round draft pick of the PEI Rockets of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and is attending his first training camp of a Q team, hoping to make the team.

He said he’d got a hard shot to the foot in the first day and it was still pretty sore but he had played both exhibition game for the Rocket when we caught up with him.

“I think I’ve been playing pretty well,” was his assessment of the first few days. His coach, Gordie Dwyer had cited him as a rookie to watch before the second game.

Last season he played for the South Shore Mustangs where he amassed a total of 58 penalty minutes to go with his 5 goals and 7 assists.

“I’m a puck moving defenceman,” Graves said. “Last season I played on both the power play and the penalty kill and have a pretty good shot from the point,” he said in assessing his strengths.

A native of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, he’s used to living away from home so doesn’t feel the move to Charlottetown will cause him any problems. “I got used to it.”

He said he’s ready to fill any role the coach gives him on his new team. “I just work hard, keep on the task. Do what I’m asked to do and go from there,” he said.

Someday he wants to play pro hockey and hopes to get a chance at the NHL. In the meantime he hopes to impress his new team and continue to grow as a hockey player. He said he doesn’t feel it will be too difficult to keep up with his schooling along the way. He’s going into Grade 11 this year.

“It’s just the same as playing hockey,” he said. “You keep on the task and complete it. You work hard at everything you have to do and it gets done. I think you just set your goals in each thing you do and work to accomplish them.”

“We feel we are very fortunate to have had the opportunity of drafting a player like Ryan,” said Serge Savard Jr., the president and governor of the P.E.I. Rocket in announcing their first round pick.  “He is a highly talented, pro-prospect who should be a dominant player in our league in the near future. He is the type of player Islanders will love.”
