Mustangs ring in New Year with win

The South Shore Canadian Tire Mustangs started 2011 the same way they ended 2010...with a win.

Led by Billy Clarkes 25 saves the Mustangs knocked off the Halifax Titans 3-2 in a shoot out today at the Halifax Forum.

After a scoreless first period in which shots favored the Mustangs 7-5 the Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on goals by Adam Stevens and Jeremy Butterworth.  Alex MacNeil and Adam Brown drew assists on both goals.  Shots in the second period favored the Titans 8-5.

In the third the Mustangs got on the board 1:01 into the period on a goal by Brandon Verge with assists going to Avery Clarke and Brennan Bailey.  Jagger Harnish pulled the Mustangs even with 6:58 remaining in the third with a powerplay goal.  Brennan Bailey drew an assist for his second point of the night.

Shots in the third favored the Titans 10-7.

After a scoreless overtime in which shots were even 2-2 the shootout was all Mustangs with Billy Clarke stopping Brett McNeil on the first shot and Shaun McEachern winning the game on the Mustangs first attempt.

Billy Clarke got the win in goal making 25 saves while Jacob Fancy took the loss making 21 saves.

The Mustangs take their modest 2 game winning streak on the road to Gatineau for the Kiwanis tournament.  The team will leave early Monday morning for the long bus ride.
