The Canadian Tire Mustangs earned a weekend split this past weekend in a two game set with the Cape Breton Tradesmen, losing 7-3 Saturday night and winning 6-5 Sunday in a shootout.

Saturday the Tradesmen showed no signs of a long bus trip, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before Ryan Graves (Harnish, Peterson) and Connor Hirtle (Graves) brought the home side back to a score of 5-2 after 2.

In the third, Jagger Harnish (Verge, Nickerson) brought the home team back to 5-3 and the team started to show some life.  A penalty put the Tradesmen on the pp where Kyle Kavanaugh put the game out of reach.  Make the final 7-3 Tradesmen.  Billy Clarke stopped 5 of 10 shots before giving way to Cole Skinner who stopped 23 of 25.  Scott MacDonald stopped 24 of 27 shots for the win.

Sunday: The Mustangs regrouped and refocused and came back to the arena Sunday morning seeking a win and a more consistent effort.

Tyler Quinlan returned to the lineup Sunday after sitting out Saturdays contest with a shoulder injury and got the Mustangs on the board 1st with a powerplay goal (assists to Graves).  That would hold up as the only goal of the period.

In the second, Connor O'Brien (Marsh) put the Mustangs up 2-0 before the Tradesmen scored two of their own.  Jon Hatt (O'Brien) rounded out the scoring in the second to give the Mustangs a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission.

In the third, the Tradesmen jumped ahead 4-3 on goals by John Walsh and Evan Romard but the Mustangs showed no quit, and a goal by Connor Hirtle (Harnish) tied the game at 4's.  Brandon Verge put the team ahead 5-4 with a shorthanded goal on a nifty breakaway move only to have the Tradesmen tie it with 3:20 remaining to play.

Overtime solved nothing, and  the teams went to the shootout where Clarke faced the leagues leading scorer in Kyle Farrell.  Clarke stops Farrell and Verge scores with a similar move to his goal in the third and the Mustangs pull out a 6-5 SO win!

Billy Clarke was strong in goal stopping 42 of 47 shots for the win.  Gabriel Dowie allowed 3 goals on 15 shots before being replaced by Scott MacDonald who stopped 12 of 14 shots.

The Mustangs will practice twice this week in preparation for the league leading Dartmouth Ice Dawgs.  The Mustangs will host the Dawgs in Chester this Sunday at 10:30am where they hope to ice a full lineup for the first time in over a month.
