A November to remember - Road weary Mustangs venture to Cape Breton

2014-11-24

Block that shot!

From the short neutral zone of the BayPlex to the panoramic Center 200 - Mustangs clash with Cape Breton West Islanders . . .

The Charlie’s Pizza South Shore Mustangs exhausting road trips for the month of November are over but not before getting a split in Cape Breton to remain in the top half of the standings.

On Saturday, after a long trip to Cape Breton, the Mustangs opened up a three goal lead in the first, even though and it took a little to shed the bus legs of the long trip.  Isaac Bridge (Creaser, Parks) snapped one quickly under the bar to open the scoring followed by an unassisted effort by Travis Parks and a gift rebound that Aidan O’Brien quickly buried.

In the second period Ryan O’Toole (Bridge, Sabean) found the back of the net to put the Mustangs up comfortably heading into the third where Tristan d’Entremont (Perry) added another. The Mustangs backed by some solid goaltending by Dawe had the goose egg denied on a bit of a scramble late in the game but the penalty killing and goaltending by the Mustangs with numerous “five on threes” really kept this game from getting close. In a one sided penalty calling spree it really showed the importance of specialty teams in games where you must dig in to come out on top. Make the final 5-1 Mustangs on a chilly night in Cape Breton

On Sunday, the delays in the game start time coupled with a short turnaround time had the Mustangs on edge and a quick change in styles was needed as the short neutral zone of the Bayplex was quickly replaced by the large ice surface of Center 200.

The Mustangs got a wakeup call early as the Islanders struck first with a nice shot inside the post and over the pad of Muise. Some puck focused players realized a little too late that danger was lurking on the backside as the late Islander, Sean Smith (Struthers, Johnston) found himself with time to set and fire.

The Mustangs would answer in the second when Ryan O’Toole (Hurlburt) would roof the point shot rebound  up where goalies keep their water bottles . Cape Breton would respond with a goal of their own, Branden Dauphinee (Yates, Smith),  just 28 seconds later that took advantage of the Mustangs still in the moment of scoring themselves.  Although the Mustangs couldn’t find the equalizer to force an overtime they did maintain a territorial advantage for the better part of the game and had some quality chances and felt they left a couple of points back on the isle. The final, in the back to back, would end up Islanders 2 Mustangs 1.
